Vers Lib Sir: Forgive me for troubling your columns again

so soon, but perhaps you, and my friend of earlier days, John Wain, and even Kate Millett herself, might be in- terested to see some verses on 'Sexual Politics' published in my book Letter from Ireland, pub- lished in 1940 in Dublin. Under the title 'Ars Brevis Vita Longa', they go as follows:

0 the moon a mighty man is she She circles round the Earth And men are men and women are women And the twain shall meet in bed 0 the sun a mighty woman is he He bears the solar system He bears it round and round and round And holds it up on nothing 0 the manly men and womanly women That only meet in bed Will soon make way for people and people Who (incidentally) go to bed ...

I was obviously a male aspirant for membership of Women's Lib as far back as 1940. But of course no one listens to anyone from Dublin unless he conies bearing a gun in one hand and a glass of whiskey or porter in the other, and with a song and a dance to boot. And that wasn't, and isn't.
