SUN-DIAL INSCRIPTIONS.
[To mas EDITOR OF THY "SPECTATOR."] Sin.,—In the Spectator of August 10th, a former Vicar of Wisbech mentions the fact that on the south wall of the south porch of the parish church this inscription is found,- " Pereunt et imputantur." The same inscription existed on the south porch of Gloucester Cathedral before the new structure was erected. It may interest your readers to know whence the words are taken, and in what connection they
stand. Martial's Epigrams : B. v., 20, runs thus :— " AD JIILIUM MARTIALEM.
Si tecum mihi care Martialis,
Semis Roost ft-al diebus ; Si disponere tempps °ties= Et very:: pariter vacare vitas :
Nec nos atria, nee domos potentum,
Nec liter tetricas, forumque triste Nossemus, nee imagines superbas Sed gestatio, fabulte, Campus, portions, umbra, virgo, theme
