A Journalist Jailed
SIR,—Sarah Gainham seems to believe that Philby was working for the British intelligence service while he was working for British newspapers and that these newspapers knew of his intelligence work. As far as I know, both these beliefs are incorrect. Philby had formerly worked for British intelligence, but the Foreign Office gave those papers who em- ployed him a firm assurance, which they subsequently repeated publicly, that this connection had ended. It was the Soviet government with which Philby had retained a connection: but that fact, obviously, was not made known to the British government or newspapers.
