Middle-Class Argument
SIR,—A. H. Brown's letter in the Spectator of February 17th has not had to wait long for an authoritative answer. According to the Observer of February 19th there appeared on February 18th in Stockholm a report of an interview given by Mr. Aneurin Bevan to the London correspondent of the Svenska Dagbladet. After saying that another factor of discontent among the middle classes was the shortage of domestic servants, he is reported to have said: "It is not because middle-class wives are in need of help in the house so much as that they want to have someone to order about—they want to raise their social self-esteern."- It Is not reported that the speaker " howled with joy ': ; but the spirit behind the remark and its implications are plain.—Yours faithfully, A. H. BAYNES. 7 Belgrave Crescent, Edinburgh.
