Gnat Allen
Sir: After his review of Stardust Memories (3 January), it should be apparent even to American readers that Peter Ackroyd likes neither the film nor its director and all his works, He is not alone, on either side of the Atlantic; indeed, a Manhattan friend described the eponymous film as Woody Allen's 'public masturbation.'
As an American member of the other camp, however— albeit one who has not yet seen Stardust Memories — I must wonder why Mr Ackroyd went to such lengths to make his reactions clear, including no fewer than three cheek-by-jowl references to the supposed failings of American culture, art, and attitudes. Unless he was writing for an audience that like himself dislikes America more than it does Woody Allen, it seems to me that his `fundamental mistake' was using a pile-driver to kill a gnat! Susan H.
