Victorious Gollancz
Sir: Your reviewer Hilary Rubinstein (Books, 17 January) says, regarding Victor Gollancz: 'There is little doubt that the Left Book Club contributed to Labour's landslide victory in 1945.'
During the war I often had to make the sleeper-less (and therefore sleepless) train journey between Scotland and London when my husband came on leave from various theatres of war. I constantly found that the only obtainable reading matter on the otherwise empty station bookstalls seemed to be Victor Gollancz's yellow- backed publications of open socialist prop- aganda — this when a political truce had been decreed and was apparently being observed by other parties.
Risking apoplexy, I sometimes read them while daylight lasted — one was spared further perusal when, in the thick darkness of a carriage packed with tired and sleeping soldiers, the blackout de- scended.
