The Irish

Sir: No doubt your correspondent Robert Brooks (17 June), who reveals himself as the epitome of good-humoured English tolerance – a curious mixture of broadminded high mindedness – has views, also, on the Irish Question (at present beyond the reach of most able-thinking politicians). As he so obviously favours repatriation of the Irish from England – exporting all those 'undesirables' and Calibans as well as those dubious trade union leaders inflicted with Irish ancestry that so besmirch our English society, composed, we were once reminded by Oscar Wilde (oh, dear, another Irishman!) of 'beautiful idiots and brilliant luna tics' – perhaps he would support the Prime Minister of the Irish Republic's proposal for the eventual withdrawal of British troops from Northern Ireland and, who knows. maybe, even the repatriation of the British themselves? After which time, what Richard lngrams and others so euphemistically speak of as the 'Law and Order freaks' can, in both countries, be left to get down to the cosier business of solving their own internal problems and disputes!
