Frock tactics

Sir: Rodney Milnes's notice (Arts, 10 February) of Prince Igor at the Royal Opera House made reference to the Polovtsian Choral Society standing motionless — albeit in more interesting frocks than their colleagues in Hudders- field.

I have subscribed to the Huddersfield Choral Society's concerts for a long time, including the great years of the late Sir Malcolm Sargent. At that time the ladies wore plain white, which subsequently was changed to a more modern shaped dress made of a brick-coloured worsted fabric.

For the 150th anniversary season 1985/6, when I had the honour to be the Society's President, we changed once more to a most fashionably designed azalea red crêpe out- fit complete with pearls and small black handbag.
