The Fairiveathers. By Annie S. Swan. (Hodder and Stoughton- 35.

6d.)—This novel, which tells the story of four orphan young women who are brought up without a profession, would have been better worth reading if the author had not thought it necessary to round off every one of their stories by a successful marriage. The part of the book which represents the life of Janet Fairweather in Canada, whither she goes to make a living, is extremely well done, and all young women who think of taking up work in the Far West should read it in order that they may know what they are in for. Janet herself is an attractive creature, and her prim- elder sister, Bella, is likewise well drawn. Madge and Nancy, on the other hand, are rather commonplace.
