No. 1348: Frank James

Set by Jaspistos: Hugh Kingsmill once lamented the fact that Frank Harris hadn't been helped by Henry James in the writing of his Autobiography. You are invited to imagine how the following passage would have emerged under James's editorial hand (maximum 150 words): I made some excuse to get her out of the room. The passage was empty. 'What is your name?', I gasped, stopping and touching her ankle.

'Miss Jokes,' she replied, drawing her foot away.

'Don't,' I cried. 'Don't draw it away! Your ankle is perfect — slender.' Before she could divine my intention, I had run my hand up her calf and touched warm flesh.

'How supple-soft!' I cried 'Let me! and I thrust my hand right up . .
