We mentioned last week with strong sympathy the hope of
the National Trust to purchase a part at least of the Ashridge property which has to be sold. The Trust has had an offer of £20,000, which has already justified negotiations for buying a stretch of land between Ivinghoe Beacon and Berkhamsted Common. On Tues- day a letter from Lord Grey of Fallodon, as Vice-President of the Trust, powerfully supported by the signatures of the Prime Minister and two of his predecessors, appeared in the Times appealing for contributions from the public to buy a greater area of land. The time is short, since the Trustees of the estate must-know within three weeks what money is likely to be available and how mu.,11 land there is a prospect of buying. Contributions should be sent to the National Trust at 7 Buckingham Palace Gardens, S.W. 1, and we earnestly hope that they will be sent quickly and generously in order to save as much as possible of this glorious example of English scenery at its best.
