Why Wheatcroft?
Sir: Two of your contributors in the 18 August issue seem to have gone astray.
Andrew Brown (Pit for the unwary) writes of `Shirwell' Colliery supported by Frank Machin's NUM history. There was no such name. It is 'Shirland', near Alfre- ton — please see The Derbyshire Miners by J.E. Williams (Allen and Unwin, 1962).
Richard West writes of Southwell. I have lived just over a mile from there for more than ten years. I know no Wheatcroft there. There are five Wheatcrofts in the local telephone directory, none lives in Southwell but all in or around Newark. In any event what is the relevance or signifi- cance of his statement that 'The com- monest name in Southwell is Wheatcroft'? Harry Wheatcroft, the rose grower, lived in Nottingham.
