Every man with a horse ought to send a guinea
to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It has prosecuted a vestry for not rolling the granite used to repair roads. The magistrate suggested a compromise, and the vestry, which though an expensive is a working body, and which was the first to introduce the steam-roller, waking up to the suffering inflicted on horses, promised to abate it. Round stones are to be used, and the steam roller to be used immediately after, so that in future no horse will be lamed merely by the road.
