SIR,—Andrew Belsey's pea-and-thimble trick with economic freedom and freedom of
expression does little credit to his powers of reasoning; it should be obvious to him that the economic freedom of one man is no longer paralleled by the economic slavery of another—for the welfare state denies us freedom and preserves us from slavery. Furthermore, though freedom of expression does not necessarily lead to a corresponding curtailment elsewhere, in practice those who clamour loudest for such freedom are the first to deny it to others.
