The supply of candidates for the vacant English Universities seat
is a little hanging fire. The only three officially in the field so far are Sir Ernest Simon, nominated from Manchester (and with very strong claims), Mr. H. Graham White from Liverpool, and Mr. S. Wormald, who stood as Labour candidate last time and secured second place in the first count, losing it in the end to Mr. Kenneth Lindsay through the relentless action of proportional representation. The two former are old Liberal Members of the House of Commons. Sir William Beveridge has not decided whether to offer himself. If he decides not to, Mrs. Stocks, the Principal of Westfield, probably will. Then there is still talk of Mr. Harold Nicolson, and one or two dark horses are still maturing schemes in their stables.
