Which 'Which?'
Guying the consumer advice organisations on TWTWTW is one thing; shutting one of them out of Choice is quite another. The BBC ought to think again about favouring Which? against Shopper's Guide. Perhaps Mr. Caspar Brook, who dislikes monopolies, should hesitate about condemning the new Shopper's Guide before the ink has dried on the first issue. What is all this row about? With the January issue of the new Guide, still edited by Elizabeth Gundrey and better than ever, according to Leslie Adrian, the British Standards Institution bows out (ostensibly anticipating the Molony recommendations) and hands over to the Con- sumer Advisory Trust. The main grumble from Which? seems to be that the Labovitch-Heseltine interest, which came to the rescue of Shopper's Guide at a time when it seemed anything but a best buy, has too strong a financial lien on the Trust, and may in fact reduce its indepen- dent critical value. My information is that Miss Gundrey is completely satisfied that she has the editorial freedom needed to do an honest job.
