Stardom: The Hollywood Phenomenon Alex- ander Walker (Michael Joseph 60s). Mr Walker traces the history of the Hollywood star system from its dawn in the Griffith era to its rapidly fading pre-eminence in the present. Gish and Garbo, Gilbert and Gable —the– stars rise again conjured by Mr Walker's enthusiastic narrative; and if they wane, as some of them most dismally do, they could not wish for a more careful epitaph than he offers them in his book.
Sugar Daddy Hugo Williams (our. 25s). Hugo Williams's first collection of poems, Symp- toms of Loss, published five years ago, was highly praised. Sugar Daddy is even bettir. These short, deceptively slight poems deal- ing among other things with marriage, fatherhood and separation, together form a unity which gives the impression of reading a highly lyrical novel; each chapter being pared down into a single remarkable poem.
