DELEGATES BEGAN to gather in Moscow for the twenty-third party
congress, while the Americans released a secret message from the Russians to Communist parties in Eastern Europe warning of Chinese plans to force a war between Russia and the United States. The army strengthened its hold on Indonesia, an American climber, Mr. John Harlin, fell to his death in an attempt to scale the north face of the Eiger, and the Government of Norway, in agreement with the opposition, decided to ban public opinion polls. The Lin- colnshire Handicap was won by Riot Act.
