Max and Mohamed

Sir: In seeking to compare me with W. Somerset Maugham's fictional character Max Kelada, Mr Theodoracopulos (`High life', 11 March) fails to point out that Kela- da makes a painful personal sacrifice in order to save the honour of a lady. In that sense, I am happy with the comparison, but there is an inconsistency. Max Kelada has a British passport of which he is proud. I am proud of being refused one, as it neatly demonstrates the depths of prejudice which exist against me in the Government and, incidentally, in the heart of your coke-sniff- ing columnist. I rejoice in such enemies.
