The news from Mexico is curiously unintelligible. According to one
account Maximilian has been shot, according to another- he has disappeared, and -according to a third he is driving the Liberals before him. The most probable statement seems to be that he is still defending Queretaro, that Mexico (city)ha s not yet fallen, but that the Juarists expect a speedy victory. The entire country, it is clear, is given up to anarchy, and Mr. Seward is said to be inclining towards intervention as a moral-duty. What with his own position and his wife's insanity, the Archduke has paid already a terrible penalty for a not ignoble ambition.
