The King of Italy has had a magnificent reception in

Berlin, remarkable for the eagerness of the people, as well as the Court, to acknowledge the Italian alliance. The city was decorated on the 21st inst. ; the whole population turned out, and the roar of the populace almost silenced that of the cannon. The inscriptions everywhere were in Italian, and Berlin, which knows its classics, did not forget the proud letters, " S.P.Q.R.," though they are not perhaps of the best omen to a King. The festivities were intensely military, and on the 22nd inst., when the Emperor toasted his guest. he drank "to the health of your Majesty and the brave soldiers of Italy ;" while the Savoyard replied that "my own soldiers. for whom your Majesty has such kindly words of appreciation. and your Army whereof I have seen such a brilliant portion to-day, will know how" to " guarantee the peace of Europe." We have remarked on the military side of this alliance else- where, and need only add here that the French Embassy did not illuminate. That is honest, at all events.
