Beyond the Shadow, and other Poems. By Stuart Sterne. (Hough-

ton, Mifflin, and Co., Boston, U.S.A.)—Mr. Sterne shows much power of melodious versification in these poems, and occasionally strikes a note of depth and strength. On the whole, he appears to more advantage in the shorter pieces. The best of these is " The Strolling Player," a really fine poem ; and with it we might men- tion " Forgetfulness " (is this a translation ?), " The Deserted House," and " Measure for Measure." The poem from which the volume takes its title has, indeed, some fine metal, if it does not display particular power.
