Prize animals
Sir: Your criticism of competitions in which animals are the prizes is most unfair to the Sun and, what is more important, to the Sun's readers.
You say that "in a large number of cases they did not want the animal, which subsequently is usually inadequately cared for, or eyen illtreated and sometimes abandoned."
The fact is that we have never had a single such complaint.
In all our competitions we have had the co-operation of the RSPCA or the British Horse Society. The home of every potential winner has been checked by them for suitability. In the isolated cases where society officials were not satisfied, the winners were, not given the animal but received a cash prize instead.
It is a pity that you did not check facts with us. It is a pity, too, that dealers do not take the care that this newspaper and its expert advisers take in making sure that every pet for which they are responsible goes to a good home.
