Up Cosgrave!

Sir: Up the Cosgrave Declaration! As people concerned with furthering the cause of Conservatism among students we hope that Patrick Cosgrave's willingness to talk to universities will be followed by other journalists and politicians.

As he justly points out, the students on the left develop often an almost religious zeal about their political activities while the more moderate students would appear content to devote a moderate amount of time to extra-curricular and political activities. Thus the case for moderation and indeed Conservatism has often gone by default.

Visits to places of higher education by articulate men like Messrs Cosgrave, Levin and Watkins could be a tremendous boost to those who are working towards a more democratic and representative National Union of Students. This would be preferable to leaving the field open for the National Front and other extremists to exploit the situation for their own personal political mileage.
