War artists

From Cdr Phipps Hornby, RN (Rtd) 'Sir: It is to be feared that a mis-statement has found its way into the book reviews that appear in your issue for May 18. The review in question is that of Edward Ardizzone's Diary of a War Artist, and it is contributed by Osbert Lancaster — whose own work if the observation may be interpolated, affords me unfailing entertainment.

Your reviewer refers to the Russian war artist Vereschchagin having perished at the Battle of Tsushima. According to the Official History of the Russ-Japanese War prepared by the Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence, and published by HMSO in 1910, the Russian artist named lost his life when the battleship Petropavlovsk was mined and sunk off Port Arthur the year before Tsushima was fought.
