SELF-DENIAL.—II is said that the Premier, on his entering on office, was offered, but de- clined, the ribbon of the Garter, conferred on the Duke of Bedford; and that Sir Robert Peel, on retiring, was offered but declined, a peerage. This is common fame : we have no doubt Sir Robert might have been Baron Tamworth long ago if he had wished it.
