Daylight saving
Sir: Mr Hodgson (Letters, 18 November) asks why we do not reschedule our day hY shifting the clocks three hours back. would result in sunset at lunchtime in Wu,winter and sunrise just after midnight PI mid-summer. However, I suspect from the examples he gives that he wants to put the clocks three hours forward, which is slightly more sensi ible, but not much because no amount °t juggling with the clock can alter the fact tha for most of the year there is not enough daylight to cover all our waking hours. In mid-winter for example having the clocks three hours in advance of GMT would Ineart that it would not be daylight until 11 ant' is true that it would not be dark until after ' p.m., but all we have done is to transfer three hours of darkness from evening to. morning and I think most people would fina it infinitely depressing to get up at 4 GMT on an icy January morning with th' prospect of four hours' darkness ahead. j.
