Irish contribution
Sir: Kevin Myers in his article (Dublin remembers too', 18 November) is 'immod- est enough to believe' that his writings in the Irish Times have helped to bring home to southern Irishmen their astonishing con- tribution to the defeat of Germany in both world wars.
As to that I cannot judge, but his Specta- tor article has certainly opened the eyes of this Englishman after a lifetime of inveigh- ing against 'those bloody Irish, cowering under neutrality whilst we died to save them from Nazism'.
Sadly on one point he is mistaken: the religious tolerance he imputes to the British Legion. Some years ago a friend of ours, a British Legion member, was a cler- gyman in Much Wenlock. He had been dropped in Greece and then fought up through Italy. The Legion chaplain retiring, he had hoped for the post. Instead a young clergyman with no military background was brought in. Alas, our friend was not C of E, but RC.
