The Great Spectator Treasure Hunt
The 9 October issue of The Spec- tator will carry the first clue in the Great Spectator Treasure Hunt.
Each issue of The Spectator for 12 weeks will contain a clue, which will lead to a trail of places round the British Isles.
Eventually the trail will lead to a last clue, indicating where the treasure is to be found.
It will not be necessary to visit the places in question — but to be cer- tain of finding the treasure it will be necessary to keep a record of all the towns and cities along the trail.
Each clue will be made up of a set of three questions. These are intend- ed to tax the general knowledge of Spectator readers — literary, historical, musical, sporting and so on. The difficulty of the questions will vary.
The first person to reach the end of the trail with a complete set of answers will be rewarded with an oil painting by Sir John Lavery (valued at £3,000). Other prizes for those who identify the hiding-place of the treasure will include a pen and wash sketch by Sir William Orpen, a limited edition print by Eduardo Paolozzi, signed copies of books by Shiva Naipaul, Piers Paul Read, Sir Fitzroy Maclean, and bot- tles of champagne and claret.
