A red rag to robbers
From Ross Davies Sir: Charles Moore finds it 'sinister' (The Spectator's Notes, 11 September) that his post should be delivered by an unmarked white van because the Post Office is short of liveried red ones. I have just come from Liverpool, where on a visit to my mother I saw her mail being delivered by a uniformed postman in a private car. My mother tells me the car is his own; the postman does not dare make his rounds with a liveried red van because the mail would be too identifiable as a target for thieves.
