Preposterous priorities
From Dr C.B. Brown Sir: I read today that we have the highest truancy rate in Europe. We also have the highest teenage pregnancy rate, the highest teenage abortion rate, the lowest educational attainment, the most inadequate health care service, a major problem with alcoholism and loutish antisocial behaviour among other important social issues requiring concerted and effective political attention.
And yet what arouses the most passion, the expense of considerable parliamentary time and the exercise of political will is the desire of this government and its Labour backbench ideologues to ban hunting with hounds (Politics, 18 September). Such a poverty of political priority and a vacuousness of sensitivity to the love and livelihood of law-abiding 'Middle England' is hard to believe.
