The official journal of Vienna publishes the text of the
Con- vention for the disposal of the Danish Duchies. It was signed at Gastein, and sanctioned by Kaiser and King at Salzburg. Prussia of course gets the pick of the spoil, Lauenburg entire, the Duchy of Schleswig—which means all Jutland by and by—Kiel for ever, Rendsburg for each alternate year, the complete control of the canal between the German Ocean and the Baltic, and a sovereign right of waybytwo roads through Holstein. Austria obtains Holstein minus Kiel, Rendsburg, the roads, and the canal, and has 375,0001. for giving up Lauenburg. Terms more humiliating to Austria, or more offensive to the population of the Duchies, it would be hard to conceive ; but Europe has a sardonic satisfaction in observing that the indivisible Duchies are divided, and that Holstein pays for her treason to Denmark with the loss of her port. As for the poor Prince of Augustenburg, who sold his birthright and then cried to have it back again, he is once more open to any offer of any throne. Perhaps the liberators may give him Alsen.
