Hazell's Annual for 1897. Edited by W. Palmer, B.A. (Hazell,
Watson, and Viney.)—This "cyclopedic record of men and topics of the day" shows, we think, an improvement in this present issue, especially in the manifest purpose of the editor to hold the balance fair when controversial topics are under review. As it is now managed, it is certainly one of the most useful volumes publish€41. The alphabetical form which is employed makes all
the information easily accessible. Special pains, too, are evidently taken to make the various articles good of their kind. The political questions of the day are treated with special care. The official information, Parliamentary lists, Government returns, he., have been corrected up to the latest possible date. The " Annual," it should be said, includes scientific, literary, and social topics, as well as political. There are also numerous bio- graphical notices.
