Rhodri's muscle
From Mr Christopher Booker
Sir: May I leap to defend Rhodri Morgan against Bruce Anderson's charge (Politics, 19 February) that he is a man who 'always speaks from the heart and indeed seems all heart, especially between the ears'? A year or two back I needed, as a journalist, some- one who could brief me on the story behind the huge project to dam up Cardiff Bay, depriving thousands of birds of their habi- tat, to create a series of lucrative office blocks. I was told, 'The story is so compli- cated that the only man who can help you is Rhodri Morgan.' I rang Mr Morgan out of the blue and he held forth for over an hour, vivitlly recounting the history of that outra- geous project in exhaustive detail. He knew about it because he had fought it through Parliament for several years. His account was a tour de force and, in an age when most politicians are becoming ever more superficial, I have often cited it as one of the few examples I have come across of an MP prepared to show the intellectual appli- cation needed to master a highly complex brief. There is definitely more between Mr Morgan's ears than heart.
