The German passion fog' writing histories is dauntless. Messrs. Harrap have now sent us Carl Kohler's A History of Costume (18s.) translated by Alexander IC; nallas and edited and augmented by Emma von Sichart. It is not so much a history of what people have worn throughout the ages, as a history of how clothes were made and how they were worn by the peoples of antiquity " until the Victorians of the middle of the last century. The cut of a toga, illustrated by drawing and diagram, 'and the technique of making it will baffle those of us who have not been trained chez Paquin, but the detailed descriptions should interest collectors, and the book should be useful to them in their reference library. For the ordinary reader the style is heavy, as is also the loaded Paper on which it is printed.
