Sir: In a statement on the eve of the Unionist

Grand Council meeting Brian Faulkner warned that if the principles of friendship and co-operation were rejected then Ireland as a whole would be condemned to strife without end.

Although not always the most liberal of men Brian Faulkner has risen to the occasion and has done great service to his country and people. Unfortunately his former colleagues chose to reject his advice.

Too many Ulster Unionists are living still in the past when they could ride rough-shod over their opponents. For many of them the calendar stands still at 1690 with King William forever on the banks of the Boyne. They think that they can stand across the path of progress, reform and peace.

Surely the time has come for the, Conservative Party to examine the bonds that bind it to the Ulster Unionists and decide whether it would not be better to sever them?
