Sir: With reference to your High life column (Party poopers, 12 January), I am amused — indeed, flattered — that Taki should imagine that I should be the repor- ter of his New Year's Eve activities in the Big Apple.

Anybody who knows me (Mr Theodor- acopulos is not one of them) will be aware that I would never even consider seeing in the New Year in any city other than Edinburgh — the only place, it would appear, where such an occasion can be celebrated in an appropriate and genuinely civilised style.
