Ulster troubles

Sir: Your strategy for surrender in Northern Ireland enunciated in your leading article (July 19) will give comfort to the IRA, though the arrogant attitude betrayed in the piece will no doubt accept that fact as part of the price to be paid for "realistic" policies in Northern Ireland.

Criticism of Westminster policies is legitimate in England, Scotland and Wales, but in Northern Ireland the failure of the loyalists to "espouse full-hearted co-operation with Westminster" is made the excuse for handing the population over to assassination, riot and pillage.

The writer conceals from the readership the fact that, were the IRA ever to achieve their immediate objectives in Northern Ireland, then a new campaign succoured by outside revolutionary forces and strengthened by success across the Irish Sea would be exported to Scotland, England and Wales.
