TWO HISTORIES

SIR,--Please allow me to correct the misleading impression likely to be given by your review of Christopher Brooke's Europe in the Central Middle Ages. This states that it 'takes the place' of a volume on the same period by Professor Z. N. Brooke and that the series of which it is one 'replaces an earlier and familiar series.' This implies that the earlier volume and series are being 'withdrawn, which is not the case. The series in question. 'Methuen's History of Medieval and Modern Europe,' still flourishes and Professor Z. N. Brooke's volume has in fact been reprinted twice in the last five years.
