Discrim'nation

Sir : It was predictable that collusion would take place between the Government and Oppoisition parties to ensure that nothing hinders the Private Member's Bill which will exempt Sikh motor-cyclists from wearing crash helmets.

The compulsory wearing of helmets is a petty erosion of freedom with which I disagree, but it is the law and should therefore apply to all of us equally: The adage 'when in Rome do as the Romans do' should be enforced, and those immigrants who do not wish to conform to our laws should be politely told to go elsewhere, instead of laws being re-drafted to suit their convenience.

Why should Sikhs be singled out for such favourable treatment when there are other groups, much longer established in this country, who are not so favoured ? For instance, will the laws of evidence now be altered to exempt Catholic priests from the need to divulge information obtained in the confessional ?
