of the United Kingdom by arguing from the particular opinion of the Northern Ireland councillor, Rhoda Paisley, whom he informs us `is against integration and regards Westmins- ter as a waste of time', via an assertion that `countless young Scots' and 'many Welsh' would agree with her, to the general conclusion that the very `idea of Britain is crumbling'.

lem of gauging public opinion would be to consult the findings of recent political opinion polls conducted in the regions. Poll results from Ms Paisley's region have consistently produced a majority in favour of Northern Ireland being governed as an integral part of the United Kingdom clearly not a finding that can be fitted easily into Allan Massie's conclusion.
