Johnson graduate
Sir: Paul Johnson (And Another Thing, 19 October) is correct in his recognition of the viral spread of Political Correctness. As a graduate student in the Business School of the most Politically Correct of the Ivy League Universities, I am required by the administration to prostrate in front of the new gods, such as the idol of Cultural Diversity.
However Paul Johnson is incorrect in blaming the castigation of Judge Thomas on Academic Aids. It was his proposal by Bush and his subsequent election that demonstrates the spread of the infection. On no account other than the fact that he was black and perceived as right wing would Judge Thomas have been proposed or elected to the Court. The support that he did receive from Democrats was from those with constituencies in the South, and thus a black electorate to satisfy. Nothing in Thomas' record suggests an impressive intellect except an ability to avoid express- ing opinions on controversial issues. Remarkably he claims never to have formed an opinion or even to have had a discussion on a woman's right to abortion, the most important judicial issue in Ameri- ca today.
