There is clearly a diversity of views on " pallant."
The derivation offered me last week was- based on a Sussex Dialect Dictionary. This week I am indebted to the Town Clerk of Chichester for a quotation from the Victoria History of Sussex, which contends that " Palenta " (whence pallant) is probably an English form and has no connection with palatium or palatine jurisdiction. Well, the doctors disagree. I must leave them to it. jANUS.
