Versailles verities
Sir: One hesitates to disagree with such an eminent historian as A.L. Rowse when he claims that Keynes 'was fatally wrong about the Treaty of Versailles' (Keynes right and wrong', 20 April). But was he?
Keynes's chilling quotation in The Eco- nomic Consequences of the Peace of the Ger- man delegation's objection to the Treaty- suggests that he was right. They said:
Those who sign this Treaty will sign the death sentence of many millions of German men, women and children.
Keynes adds, 'I know of no adequate answer to these words.' Gordon Bridger
