No help from the French
From Sir Robin Dunn Sir: Taki writes (High life, 17 April) It was the British Expeditionary Force under Lord Gort, which first broke and ran while the French covered its retreat'. I was in the 3rd Division under General Montgomery at the
time. We were first attacked by the Germans at Louvain, east of Brussels, and saw them off. Three days later we were told that the Germans had broken through the French in the south at Sedan and their tanks were threatening our communications, so we were ordered to withdraw first to the river Dcndre, then to the river Schelde and finally to the canal at Fumes covering the embarkation at Dunkirk. Our divisional front was never broken. Although we were in constant contact with the enemy, I never saw any French troops during the retreat. They were certainly not 'covering' us.
