SIR,—The White Paper on immigration has been widely condemned for

the harsh new restrictions it proposes and for its lack of positive proposals to combat racial prejudice and discrimination. In this situation the work of the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination has acquired a new significance. CARD, as the only national body enjoying the support of all the main immigrant groups, provides both a channel of protest and an opportunity for all who share in its aims to join in the constructive work

of reducing racial discrimination and promoting social harmony. Public meetings are being organised by CARD every Saturday in areas where many im- migrants live. Allegations of violence and cases of discrimination are investigated by representatives of CARD and reports are made to the appropriate authorities.

Detailed proposals for legislation against dis- crimination. including discrimination in housing and employment drawn up by CARD's panel of lawyers were submitted to the Government as an alternative to its inadequate Race Relations Bill. The work is limitless but CARD's resources are small. To attract membership from all sections of the community especially the victims of discrimination, the individual membership fee' has been fixed as low as 5s., with special rates for group affiliation. But this will not provide the funds needed to expand CARD activities. A campaign fund has therefore been opened for a minimum target of £10,000. We urge your readers to give it very generous support. Contributions and membership fee should be sent to Dr. V. L. Page, Hon. Treasurer, CARD, 23 St. George's House, Toynbee Hall, Commercial Street, London, El.
