Zionism
Sir In his snide review (December 13) of David Vitals scholarly work The Origins of Zionism, John Grigg states that Herzl's prescription for solving the Jewisb„ problem was to form "a glorified ghetto in Palestine. This remark shows a profound misunderstanding roll only of the nature of Zionism but of Jewish soeia history as.well. For Zionism is only another name for the Jewish movement for national self-determinatioe similar to the other movements for national self-determination that have brought independence to so many nations over the past 150 years. , Nor was Herzl's Zionism in any way "racial," as Grigg claims. Neither Herzl, nor any other Zionis' writer, has ever claimed that the Jews were a Pure race, but merely a people who shared a coniniciii identity based not only on a common 'religion, but `" common history and cultural tradition.
