send you a pamphlet by which, on pp. 11-15, you will see that Ruskin, one of the truest Christians I have known, shared the convictions which you express in your article on " Compassion" in the Spectator of February 20th. I have come in contact with many working men who hold aloof from all religious organisations, mainly because the leaders of those organisations do not seem to believe that Christ really meant what He said when He used the words on which you comment. Should the Churches ever come to believe that no one who does not help, or at least try to help, the needy is a member of the Kingdom, there will be, I am -convinced, a great extension of their influence.—I am, Sir, &c.,
