SIR,—May I add to Harold Nicolson's "words that have suffered

a tragic downfall" the now obsolete "cant." It bobbed on the surface of eighteenth-century conversation like a marker-buoy above a wreck, and its presence gave warning of false emotion and dishonest thinking. We are the poorer for its passing.—Yours faithfully,
