Writer turned actor
From Mr John Cole
Sir: David Lovibond's delightful article on Anthony Buckeridge (`Jennings strikes left', 13 July) will have pleased all for whom the Jennings hooks (as only childhood reading can be) were an unforgettable and formative experience. Yet
Anthony's comic gifts also find expression on the stage, where he has proved himself a talented character actor.
For many years, audiences at Glyndebourne would perhaps have been surprised to find the self-effacing creator of Jennings performing alongside the aspiring stars of the opera world in a variety of character vignettes. But it is on the stage of his local amateur theatre club that he has been best known by the community over the years for performances often of great comic insight but always of geniality and warmth. What a blessing to be able to look back on a lifetime of making people laugh in such different ways.
